The 10 Best Places To Visit In Russia – Most Beautiful Cities

As the world’s largest nation, Russia has
a special draw for visitors from all over the world. The country’s size means that there truly
is something for everyone here, whether you’re interested in historic cities and monuments,
dramatic landscapes and scenery, or world-class museums of art, literature,
and culture. Here are the 10 best places to visit in Russia,
most beautiful travel destinations. 1. Saint Petersburg. Russia’s second largest city may be known
as Leningrad, but most people refer to it by its birth name, Saint Petersburg. Saint Petersburg is filled to the brim with
world-class art, culture, and history. Known as the cultural capital of Russia, the
historic city center has the honor of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the biggest
attraction here is the massive Winter Palace, which houses the Hermitage Museum and boasts
a collection of more than three million items that have been collected from all over the
world. The city is a popular northern cruise destination
and one of the most popular places to visit in Russia. You wouldn’t run out of things to do in Saint
Petersburg even if you spent years here, but other highlights include the opera and ballet
shows, the many historical monuments, and the boat
tours of the canals. 2. Moscow. As the capital of Russia and the country’s
largest city, Moscow is where most visitors get their first real taste of Russian culture. The city is surprisingly cosmopolitan, but
it still maintains its traditional charm thanks to the many historic buildings and monuments
that dot the streets. Onion-shaped domes of historic churches fill
the skyline. A visit to Moscow wouldn’t be complete without
a visit to the historic Kremlin, which sits in the city center and is surrounded by the
well-known Red Square, one of the largest squares in the world. But visitors should also make sure to take
advantage of the many excellent restaurants, bars, and shopping centers that have sprung
up in more recent years. 3. Golden Ring. The Golden Ring is a ring of small historical
towns nestled in the countryside to the northeast of Moscow. One of the oldest regions in Russia, today
it is very popular with Russian tourists who want to experience a bygone era. Picturesque countrysides filled with cherry
orchards, quaint cottages, onion-shaped domes and iconic churches that contain the
country’s oldest art make this region a special place to visit. Many of the towns were important centers of
trade and business during medieval times, but today they’re better known for their delicious
traditional food, their beautiful domed white churches, and the quaint little gingerbread-like
cottages that dot the countryside. 4. Kazan. Approximately 10 years older than Moscow,
the city of Kazan celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2005. Kazan is sometimes referred to as the Istanbul
of the Volga because it is a city where European and Asian cultures meet. The capital of Tatarstan is a lovely city
where church tower and minarets fill the skyline. Also known as the third capital of Russia,
after Moscow and St. Petersburg, Kazan residents enjoy one of the highest standards
of living in Russia. The main tourist attractions are the Kremlin,
which boasts an impressive tower and a mosque, and Bauman Street,
which offers plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops, and bars. Both of these locations are only open to pedestrians,
but double-decker buses are available to take visitors on a tour of all the city’s other
interesting sights. 5. Irkutsk. Irkutsk is by far the most popular stop on
the Trans-Siberian Railway between Moscow and the east. With Lake Baikal, the largest and the deepest
lake in the world, only 45 km away, the city is the best base to explore the lake’s western
shoreline. Decorated wooden houses stand beside standard
Soviet block apartments, plus wide boulevards with not too much traffic for a city of more
than 500,000 souls. It also served as a place of exile for intellectuals,
artists, and others, which may be why the city has five universities. Several churches, including Ascension Church,
and geology and history museums call Irkutsk home. 6. Sochi. Sochi on the Black Sea is a great winter sports
destination. The city is also a great place to base yourself
if you’re interested in exploring the beautiful Sochi National Park,
which offers a good number of spectacular caves, waterfalls, mountains, and wildlife. Despite winter snow, Sochi offers a subtropical
climate and great beaches. Strolling along the pedestrian-only sea embankment
is a pleasant experience. Environmentally conscious travelers may want
to visit the Caucasus Biosphere Reserve. Sochi also is home to the area’s northernmost
tea plantations. 7. Veliky Novgorod. Founded in the 10th century, Velikiy Novgorod
also known as Novgorod the Great, is one of the most important cities in the country,
often called the “birthplace of Russia”. For a long time the city was a sovereign principality,
founded by merchants and ruled in relative democracy,
and the unification of Novgorod with Moscow in the 15th century was an essential step
towards a unified Russia. The city is a historic one and the traditional
wooden architecture museum of Vitoslavlitsi is a must-visit;
the open-air exhibition of Russian izbas has an ancient tradition of building without nails
or metal to hold the wooden planks together. The Kremlin fortress in Novgorod is also one
of the oldest in Russia, dating back to the 11th century. 8. Kizhi Island. Not as famous as Moscow and St Petersburg,
but an equally noteworthy Russian destination is the Kizhi Island in the heart of Lake Onega. Known especially for its fabulous open-air
museum, this one-of-a-kind complex of great historical, cultural, and natural interest
hosts an amazing collection of wooden structures, some of them part of the UNESCO World Heritage
list, others dating back as far as the 14th century. The most famous attractions on this tiny island
include the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus. In addition to some of the country’s finest
examples of wooden architecture, visitors will have the chance to explore a
series of ancient rural settlements characteristic to the Karelia region and scattered among
this beautiful, almost pristine nature paradise. 9. Vladivostok. Coincidence or not, one of Russia’s most
attractive cities is a picturesque port on the Pacific Ocean. So, a fabulous 4,000 miles from Moscow lies
Vladivostok, a town that impresses with its scenic location, uninterrupted sea views,
and hilly streets that remind travelers of storied San Francisco. During summer, the Sportivnaya Harbor is the
liveliest place in town, greeting visitors with an amusement park and dozens of street
vendors selling drinks, food, and all kinds of colorful souvenirs. Other places of interest in Vladivostok include
Ploschad Bortsov Revolutsy – the city’s main square;
the state-of-the-art Russky Island Bridge that connects the city with the small island;
the Arseniev Regional History Museum; and the Primorsky State Art Gallery. 10. Yekaterinburg. Yekaterinburg is an industrial city in the
Ural Mountains that has many things going for it. It is, however, largely remembered as the
place where Tsar Nicholas, the last tsar of Russia, and his family were
executed in 1918 during the Russian Revolution. Today’s Yekaterinburg has a vibrant cultural
scene, home to many libraries, theaters and playwrights, and dance companies as well as
popular Russian rock bands. Russia’s fourth-largest city also has more
than 30 museums, including the oldest wood sculpture in the world at the Shigir Collection;
another museum houses more than 300 Nevyansk icons.

Pavel .
